Winter Break Time-Sharing

By: Attorney Sara Canepa-Zenuni

The slightly cooler weather in sunny Florida reminds us that winter time has arrived! Even though us Floridians will likely not see snow flakes, the cooler weather is a reminder that the end of the year and the accompanying holidays are near. Many families look forward to this time of year as they plan for Winter Break. Typically, a child will be out of school for two weeks beginning mid December through the new year.

For those unique families that will have to split time-sharing schedules during this holiday season, here are some scheduling options you may want to consider:

  • Winter Break: During even numbered years, Parent A has parenting contact during the first half of the Winter Break. During odd numbered years, Parent B has the first half of the Winter Break.
  • First half begins at the end of school on the last day of classes before the break
  • First half ends if the break has an odd numbered of days, at 2:00 p.m. on the day after the midpoint date or if the break has an even numbered of days, at 8:00 p.m. on the midpoint date.
  • The second half begins if the break has odd numbered of days, at 2:00 p.m. on the day after the midpoint date, if the break has an even number of days, at 8:00 p.m. on the midpoint date.
  • The second half ends at the beginning of school on the first day of classes after the holiday.

Or

  • Winter Break: During even numbered years, Parent A has parenting contact during the entire Winter Break, including Christmas and New Years. During odd numbered years, Parent B has parenting contact during the entire Winter Break, including Christmas and New Year.

Further, every holiday celebrated during Winter Break can be specifically addressed to meet each individual family’s dynamic.

Winter Break should be filled with fun family memories. Here at Compass Law we strive to assist families figure out what best works for them during this holiday season. The Compass Law Team is experienced in reducing conflict that may, for some families, surround the end of the year holidays.
